Chris, I really appreciate your post. As a new therapist, I wish there were more transparency and examples of the mishaps that happen in therapy—when an attempt to ask a question goes wrong or the timing is off. I feel like I'd learn more from these real examples than from the perfectly placed questions demonstrated in idealized sessions.
I consistently reflect to my clients the way that I am personally mapping the narrative unfolding in real time because it feels the most kind. It takes me out of the role as expert on them and places me along side them as investigator of the landscape. Then I ask them where they want to go so I’m not driving thier outcome. It is the only way I know how to work ethically.
I appreciate you inviting us to make the implicit explicit and the challenge to see how no one improvises from nothing. I often sit with this knowing in my sessions that I am mapping from a structure I understand and that matters when I’m attempting to draw the map as I walk it with another.
I am trained in many of the top models of trauma therapy, SE, Sensorimotor, Brain Spotting, IFS etc of which many of these are based on indigenous wisdom, or universal principles of healing. The foundations of healing come from the presence and somatic or energetic resonance of the person across from you as you’re invited inward. This is less about technique and more about the heart centered availability of the provider. In our current cultural cosmology that has put logic and reason over the heart, we have lost the principles that are embedded in all forms of healing and transformation. In this way, healing is less of a buffet and sampling protocols more of a deep dive into the subconscious. All of which requires the ability to drop into the body, bringing compassion and forgiveness to the wounds of the heart. Sadly, this has been lost in service of the solar energy in the past centuries. However, I feel there is a rising of the lunar energy and a return to the heart. When that happens, we will not need the protocols because we can trust our embodied wisdom and heart centered presence as it presents itself in the spaces that we hold. Thank you for your article.
